Sept 1, 2008 - Dave Schlabach & September News

Thanks to all of you that attended Dave Schalbach's Memorial Service.  I can sincerely say it was an honor to be there and wonderful to meet all of Dave's friends and family throughout the country.  The setting was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't have been been blessed with a better day or with better folks at the service.  There was a 20 minute video of Dave's life which was extremely touching and contained footage of Dave blowing harp and pics of his entire life. The highlight of the event for me was Dusty, Dave's son, playing drums with us.  Just like with Dave, I had only known him for a couple of minutes and already jamming with him!   I am thankful I had the opportunity to perform, travel, and record with Dave and will carry a piece of him with me on every performance here on out....

September will be busy month.  Graham Warwick and I will be playing at the Victory Grill later this month in Austin along with more Blue Monday Jams at Silvercreek in Fredericksburg. Its always packed and poppin' so come join us for some of the best German food, brews and blues in the Hill Country.  The month will conclude with a special visit from Brother Fork and the Spooners on the last Blue Monday in September.

All for now.
Peace and Blessings to all,
Mark

July 21, 2008 - Ode To Dave Schlabach...

This weekend I lost a dear friend and a gifted harmonica player and musician, Dave Schlabach. Relatively speaking, I did not know Dave that long, but the time I did know him, neither one of us let the grass grow under our feet as there was a great urgency for both of us to tap into the great chemistry that existed between us.

Over the past year, we had performed together in Indianola, Mississippi at the oldest standing juke joint in Mississippi, competed in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and all along the I-10 corridor of Texas from Houston to Fredericksburg in addition to releasing a CD, performing a live radio broadcast and several adventurous trips where we built a lot of fond and unique memories.

Dave was an engineer by profession, but after working for many years in the petroleum business, gave up his career in pursuit of a more simplistic lifestyle. Dave was born in California and his personality would be difficult to stereotype. He was a smart man with a great degree of common sense and logic, but he acted from the gut and his political demeanor was about half hippie and half ultra conservative. His greatest virtue was the ability to see good even the bleakest of situations. Because of that, he was a pleasure to be around.

Dave loved fun and could connect with anybody. He could take the simplest moments and turn them into a treasure. As an example, I’ll tell you about a brief moment in Indianola. Indianola is a small and very poor town and doesn’t see a lot of change. The music festival we were participating in took place during musician hours (dusk to dawn) and since both of us were early risers, we found ourselves up early on a Saturday morning, drinking coffee and wondering around downtown Indianola. We both love pawn shops and the thought of hitting the jackpot with some vintage piece of gear with our name marked on it. That morning we visited a local pawn shop. There was a local gentlemen sitting outside the shop, who caught our attention as we were walking in. He looked lonely and looked like he was prepared for a full day of sitting on the pawnshop porch. After our brief visit, we stepped back outside and began talking to him. Though we didn’t have a lot in common with him, Dave found anything and everything to talk about with him. Five minutes turned to ten, ten to twenty, and twenty minutes turned into an hour. Before long, we felt like he was part of the band and were on a first name basis with him. That night he showed up with a half dozen friends to cheer us on. That would have only happened with Dave.

Dave also got bored quickly with repetition. As a musician, it was both a challenge and a sense of adventure, as he didn’t like repeating a tune, and if he did, he didn’t want to play it the same way twice. He also didn’t like to rehearse very much which could make things really interesting and added immensely to the spontaneous factor. When we were not playing as a duo, we played with a full band and Dave would often whip out his electric violin. It was his own invention. Not to say the electric violin per say, but I have never seen anybody play it though a wah-wah pedal and a fuzz box. It was similar to what I think – say Jimi Hendrix - would have done with the violin. When he did play harmonica or “blues harp”, Dave explored the upper registry like no one I have ever heard, emulating a whistle that would pin your ears back a notch or two. Whatever he did, it was all Dave and in his unique style.

I last saw Dave a few nights before he departed to Panama on vacation with his beautiful wife, Eva. They were to spend a few weeks in the water scuba diving, spear fishing and sailing, which outside of music, was his favorite past time. That night we played our last tune together and talked about the next stuff on our list of to dos.

After a day of scuba diving and sailing, Dave suffered a heart attack and died, on the beach, in Eva’s arms. I know he counted that as a blessing and could not have imagined a better way to leave this world. Relationships may be gauged by the degree of positive impact that a person makes on another. In this case, I can’t thing of one that was so concentrated into a period of time. I count myself fortunate as to have known him.

July 20, 2008 - Remembering Dave Schlabach

Good morning all,

It is with regret that I inform you that my good friend and harmonica player, Dave Schlabach, has passed from this world.

Dave was vacationing in Panama, and after a day of surfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving suffered a heart attack and died on the beach in the arms of his wife Eva.

Dave, known by many as “Drywall Dave”, was featured on the CD release “Slideaway” earlier this year. Dave and I had a tremendous past year, traveling and performing together in Mississippi, the International Blues Challenge, a live radio broadcast and performing along the Texas I-10 corridor from Houston to Kerrville/Fredricksburg area.

Dave was one of those fun loving people that could take the bleakest of situations and find the good in it, and because of that, was a pleasure to be around. Outside of music, Dave loved being on the beach, and know he couldn’t have picked a better situation and company for his departure from us.

Eva told me that a memorial service would be put together in a few weeks to celebrate his life. Please keep Eva and Dave in your prayers.

Peace and God Bless you all,
Mark
